An Iowan and Wisconsinite found themselves in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two years.
He did some commercial insurance brokering, she did some English teaching, then they moved back to Chicago with a baby porteño.
Here's their little story...

James @ Hospital Aleman

  • first night in the hospital (thanks Anna for the US magazines!)
  • ...I look like I'm relaxing now, but...
  • we thought we'd be given the choice to have James in our room or spend the night in the nursery...
  • per recommendation by a friend, we planned on him sleeping in the nursery so we could get some sleep as well
  • when the nurse came in toward the end of the night, we asked her about this and she said, "Oh, we don't do that anymore.  He stays with you."
  • come again?
  • we feel like bad parents, trying to send our newborn away, but we just thought that was how it was done (and we really wanted some sleep...)
  • needless to say, our night was spent up with James, helping him hack up amniotic fluid that was stuck in his gut...poor lil' guy would start gagging (so scary for mommy!), then spit up, sometimes quite a bit, and therefore wasn't too interested in eating those first 24 hours
  • another fun thing was James' first poop (sorry, James)
  • we had read about the meconium...the black, tar-like stuff that comes out with a baby's first bowel movement
  • but I had pictured just a little bit of it...well James had A LOT and this was our first dirty diaper change using the hospital's method of cotton and liniment oil (looks like this, or in the US, this)
  • we first went through our sample pack of wet wipes...something we were both more comfortable with using
  • but after blowing through those, we were forced to try the cotton...and it was getting stuck to everything...
  • so we buzzed the nurse...3:00 in the morning and us newbie parents need help changing a diaper!
  • apparently you have to put quite a good amount of the creamy oil stuff on the cotton in order for it not to stick (obviously)...thanks nurse!
  • between diaper changes and spit ups, both of us were up most of the night, and when the nurse came in around 4am and saw me still awake, she told me I had to sleep
  • she put James on his side in the bed next to me and told me to sleep...and I did...más o menos

Tu 11.19.13
  • good morning sunshine!

  • the purpose of the rest of this post is mainly to share photos from the hospital...so here we go...
grandma rocking James
gift from the hospital - a diaper bag!
our hospital room number..Bienvenido James!
  • remember that cute BIG foot from one of our ultrasounds?  so this is what it looks like from the outside...still think he's got daddy's feet

such a sweetheart
  • these are the comforters they use for the babies (HUGE)...and our room was already super warm...almost womb-like ;)

  • we were told babies need to stay in the hospital at least 36 hours to be routinely checked and monitored...that would mean we'd be going home at midnight, so instead we stayed another night
  • night #2 in the hospital...going with the swaddle method
*note the book in the corner...we maybe needed to reread the directions
  • James wasn't spitting up as much his second day, so we were crossing our fingers for a night of a bit more sleep

  • night #2 = MUCH better than night #1!

W 11.20.13

desayuno-ing y siesta-ing
shot from our little balcony
love his skinny, long La Liberte legs!
passing all his tests like a champ
  • so maybe I made Jake, James, and my mom take some pics a la Will, Kate, and George on our balcony...sorry, we just had to!

  • I really loved having the balcony with green outdoor space to look out to...it a was peaceful hideaway in this big, noisy city
  • a peek into our room...saying goodbye!

he's got some German in him...
  • so about what we did next...
  • I won't go into too much detail, but circumcisions are not performed in hospitals in Buenos Aires, so if you'd like the procedure done on your son, you must find a doctor who does it in his/her own clinic
  • the doctor we went with just happened to be available at 2pm the day we left the hospital...and his office was a few blocks away
  • the hospital kicked us out at noon (even though we tried hanging around as long as possible to close the gap before our appointment)
  • we figured it was best to get this done ASAP, so we had lunch at the hospital's cafeteria then off we went
  • the doctor wouldn't let Jake be in the room for the procedure (for fear of fainting apparently), so we sat in the waiting room listening to our poor son's blood-curdling screams...Jake paced back and forth and I cried...it's hard listening to your child in pain!
  • luckily it was a fairly quick and simple procedure and everything ended up just fine (*if you find yourself in BA needing to deal with this situation and have any questions, feel free to contact me for details!)
  • at this point, we hailed a cab, my mom walked home, and we nervously got James buckled in for his first cab ride
  • if you know anything about drivers here and/or the amount of bumps in the roads, you'll understand why I kept my eyes on James and refused to look out the window on the 7 minute ride home
looks like he doesn't mind the ride...a true porteño
  • WELCOME HOME JAMES!!!

  • my mom had given me the two outfits in which she brought us home from the hospital...one for a boy, one for a girl
  • so Uncle Ricky and Uncle Matt, you wore this little blue sleeper once too! crazy!
  • ahhhh...home at last
  • AHHH!!! sushi and chardonnay at last!
first meal home from the hospital...perfection!
  • we love you so, James!

James' Birthday - November 18, 2013

in an attempt to be as candid as I feel comfortable, I'd like to share James' birth story...for family, friends, future-mamas, or for those who are interested in hearing it and connecting with our experience...

M 11.18.13
  • ...at around 4:30am, my water broke (or at least it started to)
  • but without contractions
  • so after some Googling with Jake, we decided to go back to sleep for a bit
  • but then the water kinda continued to break (I call it a slow leak)
  • Jake got up to shave and get ready for the gym, I woke my mom up, told her what was going on and she encouraged us to call our doctor
  • doc said to come in and have the midwife check me out, so we got our things together, took a few last belly shots:

so, did my water break, or what?! 6:30am and on our way to find out!
  • and because I wasn't really having contractions yet, we thought maybe we'd walk the mile to the hospital
  • so there we were: my mom, Jake, me, the bump, and our hospital bags walking our way across Parque Las Heras
  • but after walking about a block across the park (and the "slow leak" continuing) we decided to hop in a cab
  • in the cab, my contractions started coming on a bit, but felt more like menstrual cramps, and therefore weren't too painful
  • but it was a good thing we took a cab, because by the time we got to the hospital and were in the elevator up to the maternity ward, I think my water had finished "breaking"
  • I arrived at the front desk around 7am, a bit of a wet mess...they put me in a wheel chair and took me to the labor room where they hooked me up to a monitor to monitor contractions and the baby's heartbeat
  • there could only be one "visitor" in the room at time, so my mom stood outside the door for the first couple hours, and when Jake had to pop out to fill out paperwork and such, my mom came in to be with me.  I was so happy she was there
  • when Jake was in the room, he was holding my hand, fanning me, because I was dying of heat, especially during contractions, and reading a book aloud to try to distract me (which didn't last long because as the pain increased, my focus on the book decreased significantly)
  • because my water had broken, the contractions weren't too strong yet, I was only dilated 2cm and I had tested positive for GBS around week 37, my doctor and midwife decided to give me pitocin to help move things along...this was about an hour or so after arriving
  • well let's just say that smile didn't last long because the pitocin worked
  • things moved along at a nice, steady (painful) pace
  • I was asked a few times, after the more painful contractions, if I wanted drugs...I don't remember the midwife saying "epidural" (which I wanted to try to do without), but Jake and I concluded that that's probably what she meant
  • it was sounding pretty convincing though, with all that pain...and she promised us that I'd still be able to walk, feel my legs, and push...but I continued to say no, probably because I just wasn't sure enough of what exactly I would be getting (lost in translation...?)
  • I continued to dilate about 2cm every hour and just before 11am I was at 8cm and moving into the delivery room
  • and Jake got to change into his special delivery outfit:
how handsome!
  • here we are...the labor and delivery tag team...this was taken around 11am...and I was more than ready to get that baby out of me!
  • time to get this show on the road...
  • after one failed "push" my dr. said I was only 9cm so he'd be back in a half hour...what?! wait! come back, let's do this now! I really wanted the pain to be OVER with
  • so he left and did a c-section real quick next door, and came back (what felt like) an eternity later
  • this is when I sort of panicked...mainly because I knew what was about to happen, and that sort of scared me a lot...I wasn't expecting to feel fear or panic, but that's what I was feeling...I was already in a lot of pain, and I could only imagine how much worse it was about to get
  • the dr. gave me the go ahead to try to push again...he told me to breathe in, hold my breath and push...except I breathed in, and screamed at the top of my lungs while attempting to push
  • the nurses had to close the doors
  • the dr. reminded me of what to do...told me I didn't need to scream...I was thinking, 'Ya right buddy, this hurts! I can scream if I want!'
  • then I realized he meant that instead of screaming, I should hold my breath and use that energy to bear down and push...ok, ok...got it
  • so I tried it that way, and sure enough, with the next push, the babe's head was crowning
  • the dr. pointed out the pelos (the baby's hair) to Jake and I'm like, 'Come on! We can look when it's fully out! Let's keep going!'
  • again, being a rookie at this birthing stuff, I didn't realize that we were waiting until the next contraction to push (maybe I didn't get as much out of the child birth classes that were in Spanish...I seemed to miss these small details...oops)
  • this may have been the point where the doctor, nurse, and midwife walked away...
  • and that's when I really panicked
  • I was desperately asking Jake what in the world they were doing...I thought for sure something was wrong and they were preparing for a c-section
  • at one point I gasped aloud, "What's going on?!" to which my doctor replied, smiling, "You're going to have a baby."
  • apparently, they were just prepping everything for the baby to actually come out since we were within minutes of delivery
  • with the next contraction, another push, and the next, one final push...and at 12:28pm, James was born, all 7lb 11oz 20in of him!
  • I was exhausted and had never felt such relief....this grueling task was finally behind me
  • since we hadn't found out the gender, one may think I'd ask right away, "Boy or girl?", but I felt pretty out of it...
  • but soon enough, the dr. showed him to me, saying, "It's a boy!" (I, and everyone else, kinda had a feeling)
  • he was then put  on my chest for me to hold...such an amazing, surreal feeling...to hold this baby that's been growing inside of me for the first time...incredible
  • I kept repeating, "Hi!" to the baby, and "Is he ok?!" to the medical staff, because he was looking pretty purplish-gray
  • the nurses reassured me he was just fine
  • dad then accompanied James to get cleaned up in the small room next door, then was returned to me to try to get him to eat a bit (he wasn't having it)
  • and of course dad got to hold him for the first time:
  • next, he was taken to the nursery to finish up, and I got to my room around 1pm where my mom was waiting
  • eventually James was brought down to us...

  • ...and he got to meet grandma
  • here's grandma holding him for the first time..she's already got him praying!
  • we were told in one of our child birth classes that it is tradition and a rule at Hospital Aleman for the babies to be dressed in white while in the hospital
  • this is what the hospital had him dressed in: a smurf-like, cream-colored hat and a white button down long sleeved onesie where the bottom part flipped up from behind and had strings to wrap around him and tie in the front (confusing, I know)...but they sort of looked like robes and were convenient for diaper changes because we could keep his top half warm while dealing with the bottom half...
  • we were hoping he'd be sent home in one of these outfits or that they'd have them for sale, but neither were possible
  • so the nurse told us about a store across the street where we could get one, so that's what we did...bought this cute little souvenir for the small guy
  • the rest of the day was spent resting, eating, rocking the little one, getting a few checks by the nurses, and emailing and Skyping friends and family to share our wonderful news

  • we feel so grateful to have had a healthy, safe pregnancy and delivery...and to be blessed with this handsome, healthy little guy:
wonder what he's thinking...?
  • I can't believe this pregnancy is over...definitely a bitter sweet thing
  • I miss my belly, but love our little baby son...and can't wait for all the new experiences we have ahead of us with this little bundle

the days before becoming a mommy...

  • amazing things have been going on around here...so amazing that I've found it hard to get back to this blog, which I feel guilty about and therefore am going to make a good effort to catch up here in the next few days...
  • so I think I left off with the 39th week...the days before I became a mommy...
Th 11.14.13
  • this morning I woke up and swam at the gym for the last time...swimming really did me good during this pregnancy and I will miss it until I can regularly put it back into my schedule
  • after some pool time I walked my way over to the hospital for my weekly non-stress test and OB appointment...everything was fine, baby responded to the OJ and medialunas I consumed, scheduled the same appointments for next week, unless the baby arrived before
  • I kind of asked the baby to stay put so I could head over to a pregnant lady pool party that afternoon
  • luckily, baby listened, and we got to enjoy an afternoon of snacking, chatting, and soaking up some sun around the pool
pregnant ladies lined up in order: due in November (me), then December, February, March, and April...got a mix of nationalities too: US, Canada, Canada, US, Australia!
  • later that afternoon, I had scheduled a little pre-mommy-pampering time (mani/pedi by Cassandra...new in town and best in the city!)
  • and that night, one last date night with the husband...our last night just "us" (mom comes tomorrow, and baby soon after!)
finally (kinda) getting the papa in some of these belly shots...39 weeks 2 days
  • I do a lot of the "lasts" thing...last pool day, last dinner out, last movie night...all before the baby comes and we become parents
39 weeks 2 days
  • I'm sure this drives Jake and lots of other people nuts...but I can't help it!  I think of these things sometimes...which I hope helps me to enjoy the moment, as it will never be the same again... bittersweet, but mostly sweet
  • so I requested Bella Italia...a fancier (read: more expensive) Italian restaurant in our neighborhood that I had been interested in trying
  • and it was muy rico (delicious!) and a great way to spend some alone time before out lives changed forever (haha)
  • the bread basket was impressive
  • as was the wine selection, presented to us via ipad (what?! is this the new thing?)
  • we split pasta and risotto dishes, both tasty, and service was great, so we'd recommend this place
  • here's the bump from my viewpoint looking down...and having to bend over quite a bit to see my toes (isn't the pedicure cute?)

F 11.15.13
  • my mom's arrival date!
  • Jake and I got up bright and early to take the bus out to the airport
  • long story short, after spending the morning at the airport with all kinds of miscommunication about where in the world my mom's flight was, Jake went to work, and I got home around 2pm without my mom
  • mom spent the night in Chile, which she ended up really enjoying (ask her about it...or better yet, ask my dad...he felt great not knowing where in South America his traveling-alone-no-way-of-contacting-her-innocent-wife could be)...then finally landed in BA the next morning...this time, we sent a taxi for her
Sa 11.16.13
  • around mid-day, the taxi safely delivered my mom to our apartment, along with all kinds of US goodies such as five bags of Christmas cookies (thanks to Betsy Schubert)
  • yes, my mom packed cookies on her flight to Argentina, and they surprisingly made it here without too much crumbling (she carried them on)
  • we helped my mom get unpacked...most of what she brought was for us and the baby - thanks for hauling it all mom!  We appreciate it so much!
baby stuff on the couch, food in front...my mom was allowed one outfit for herself and a pair of underwear (jk)
  • we took my mom to Oui Oui for lunch, a café on my pre-baby list
HOORAY!!! SHE'S HERE!
  • I've since caught myself day dreaming of Oui Oui's slushy, refreshing lemonade...must get that recipe to make at home...will get me through these hot summer days!
  • I think the babe and I may be making some return visits this summer
  • the rest of our afternoon was spent putting things away and organizing the new baby stuff
  • here's Jake assembling one of most likely many baby items:
hopefully the future crib will be as easy to assemble as this Rock 'n Play!
Su 11.17.13
  • well the baby waited for Grandma, so now we were ready for it to come at any point
  • so first we went to church and prayed for its safe arrival
  • then we did a lot of walking through the Palermo Parks, because don't they say walking helps induce labor or something?

  • we spotted a mama duck and her ducklings...a premonition that baby was on its way?
  • the last thing we did to try to get baby to come was eat pizza and empanadas (ok, this one isn't proven to induce labor, but I was STARVING by this point)
mom's happy to be back in Argentina, eating their infamous and delicious empanadas!
  • Sunday night, we all went to bed...my mom a Grandma of only three, Jake a non-dad, and me a non-mom
  • ...little did we know that the next morning...
