An Iowan and Wisconsinite found themselves in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two years.
He did some commercial insurance brokering, she did some English teaching, then they moved back to Chicago with a baby porteño.

the day our lights went out

  • you all remember the big storm? well let me re-cap that lovely day...
Th 12.6.12
  • what started out as a regular Thursday, quickly turned to chaos
  • in the morning, a container of pesticides caught fire in Puerto Madero (where my husband works) which caused a toxic cloud to float amongst the city
  • only 3 out of 11 students showed up for school
  • then the rain came...lots and lots of rain...
  • which of course flooded the streets of BA, so much so that the subway station near our house turned into a pileta...
  • so power was cut in our neighborhood
  • oh yeah, and so was our water
  • then the sky turned a strange yellowy-orange, leading us to believe that the world was coming to an end
  • do me a favor, and go here to read all about todays' events...don't forget to click on the links so you can view the videos...trust me, they're a good laugh
  • when the husband came home, instead of seeking AC'd shelter in a restaurant with a good meal, we ate from the fridge...frozen pizza, veggies, cheese in various forms, milk, yogurt, and ice cream...talk about dairy overload!
  • the aftermath...no water to clean! agh!
  • and at 5:30am...the clouds parted, the ceiling fan in our bedroom began to turn, water came back on, and all went back to normal
  • (except our laundry machine is still not fixed, and the storm caused our microwave to go out...DOH!)
