An Iowan and Wisconsinite found themselves in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two years.
He did some commercial insurance brokering, she did some English teaching, then they moved back to Chicago with a baby porteño.
Here's their little story...

Artsy Weekend w/ bonus day off!

...this was a while back, just didn't get around to posting until now!

Sa 6.29.13
  • this is what happens when you bring your husband shopping with you
  • you come home with weird, random treats like peelable banana frozen pops
  • they were kinda fun to peel (as instructed on the box)
  • the yellow peel was banana-flavored
  • the inside looked like a hot dog that had a mild-chocolate flavor
  • probably not tasty enough to buy again, but fun to try
Sa 7.6.13
  • a little 20.5 week belly on our way to see some art
  • guess it was a popular exhibit!
  • good thing Le Pain Quotidien is nearby...so while I wanted in line, Jake picked up pan chocolat and a hot chocolate...mmm...perfect for a chilly art museum queue
  • nice of him to keep the crowd satiated during the long wait
  • can you spot the eager museum-goer? ...we were bored

  • the bus stop was even festively decorated with spots! doesn't it remind you of this childhood book?
  • summiting and looking back
  • after a little over an hour, we made it in!  *FYI: 2x1 deal with your Club La Nación card

  • since this was Jake's first time to Malba, we checked out the other rooms as well
  • here are some of my favorites:
Antonio Berni, Manifestación 1934
Miguel Covarrubias, George Gershwin, An American in Paris 1929
  • here's a photo of an older Yayoi (currently 84) painting some of the pieces you see below

  • with admission, you received a sheet of stickers...and we later saw why
  • the downstairs exhibit had a white room where people could stick their dots wherever they liked...on the walls, white furniture, etc.

  • ...or on yourself!
  • we enjoyed this exhibit...lots of creativity, color and unique art!
  • exhibit lasts until September 16th...check it out!
  • we just happened to pass Almacen de Pizzas on our way back home
  • so we stopped in for an early-ish dinner
fancy faina...chickpea bread topped with mozzarella, basil, and dried tomato
we thought this salami on the Cantimpalo Tandilense would be cooked, but it was cold, so I had to pick it off...sadly it looked better in the picture than it tasted, Jake said
  • look what else we picked up at Le Pain Quotidien:
  • which was turned into some mighty good Sunday morning French toast!
Tu 7.9.13 - bonus day off!
  • in this post, I mentioned the July 9th Independence Day holiday...
  • ...and I had mentioned that we met up with some friends who were moving back to Oxford soon, so we met up for dinner
  • here are some photos from the meal at La Peña del Colorado
assortment of empanadas...maybe the best we've had yet?

  • we shared a mix of different dishes: clockwise starting with the one with corn:
  • carbonada tucumana con fruta (veggies, beef, peaches)
  • guiso de lentejas bien criollo (lentil stew)
  • tomaticán cuyano con chichoca de tomate (tomato-based stew topped with cheese and egg *a favorite!)
  • cordero patagónico (lamb with veggies)
  • in keeping with tradition, we ordered the flan to share for dessert
  • unfortunately, the lighting wasn't the best, but here's a shot of the four of us...we'll miss you guys!  and we've really enjoyed spending some time with you here in BA :)
  • (we'll be visiting England someday...promise!  and you're always welcome in Chicago!)
Emily was in my Spanish class at Vamos over the summer
  • quick review of La Peña del Colorado
  • live, often traditional folklore music is performed in one section of the restaurant most nights; you have to pay extra to sit there on these nights (something around AR$30-50), or you can sit in the side room (and still hear the music) for free...that's what we did
  • service was so-so...we had to ask for a bread basket and bread didn't seem particularly fresh
  • the empanadas were great, but they didn't have meat empanadas that night...WHAT?! it's a national holiday and the meat kind are the most traditional!
  • although licuados (smoothies) were on the menu, they were out (tends to happen a lot here)
  • the casseroles were pretty good, with the tomaticán being our favorite, and the lentil one maybe second favorite
  • I think we'd go back for some live music and the empanadas! especially because it's in our neighborhood (Güemes, entre Vidt y Salguero) and affordable
