An Iowan and Wisconsinite found themselves in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two years.
He did some commercial insurance brokering, she did some English teaching, then they moved back to Chicago with a baby porteño.
Here's their little story...

Palermo (1)5K

so this is what happened...

Sa 8.3.13
  • I got myself out the door for a trial 2 miler (heat pack and tylenol before)
  • within the first 5 steps I knew it wasn't looking good
  • I ranjogged, waddled about a quarter mile...walked a bit, then picked it back up, trying to block out the pain (silly)
  • made it to the mile turn around, walked a bit more...got myself home, where ice awaited me, and later a bath of epsom salts
  • we concluded to go to the race in the morning, see how I felt, and at the very least, attempt the 5k, even if I had to walk
Su 8.4.13
  • what a beautiful morning! high 40's...sun rising...planetarium glowing and chorizo stand asleep for at least a few more hours...perfect day for a race!

  • first step of any race? find the port-a-pots and bag check
  • can anyone explain why there were 5 MALE port-a-pots to every 1 FEMALE?
  • guys can kinda go wherever they want (unless of course, it's #2), but really, the lines are ALWAYS longer for the women!
  • luckily we ladies are smart, and we just used whatever one was open, paying no attention to the little man or woman symbol on the door
at this point, I'm still pretty naive...really hoping for the 15k!
  • getting ourselves ready at the start...temps creeping up into the 50's...music was pumpin'
  • and we're off!
  • thinking..."ok...this isn't so bad" you know, that adrenaline rush at the beginning when it's all crowded, crowd is abundant and cheering loudly, and everyone's feeling great and is so excited??
  • well about a mile in, I was feeling it, but not in a good way...those darn sacroiliac joints of mine!
  • ...and at about the mile and a half point, it was decision time:

  • BOO HOO! look at everyone going right!
  • there they go...
  • you can probably guess which way we went...
  • after walking a few steps, but realizing it hurt more to do this when starting back up with the run, we just jogged it in the rest of the way
  • but of course not without snapping a quick photo of the bumps
Jake told me to pose as if I was a hooker picking him up...because this is what happens with the trannies 'til the wee hours of the morning...[not such a cute picture anymore, is it?]
  • here I am, chugging my way to the finish line (you can kinda see the waddle here)
  • ...and we're done! my hip flexors hurt the rest of the day, but hey! got to wear my cool belly support belt, as is being modeled below (hasn't really been helping)...
  • plus we got medals (what?? for a 5k?)...and a plastic wrap thing (we didn't do a marathon for goodness sakes!)...
  • ...and the best goodie bags in BA yet! there was even fresh fruit! (of course the time I don't even need nourishment after a race because I barely broke a sweat, but hey! I won't ever complain about a post-race banana!)
  • and some guy (the owner of COFFEE AVENUE) had the brilliant idea of parking his coffee truck right at the finish line
  • I mean...what runner doesn't want a hot mocha after a long (or short) race on a chilly winter/felt-more-like-spring day?
  • he got us!
  • (p.s. on our walk home, Jake and I dreamt up a budding business idea: a café/coffee truck combo...Jake more so wants the truck, I more so want the café...but when we make it big, we'll just do both!)
  • we're serious
  • side note: this was probably the most well-run race we've done so far in BA, with the half marathon coming in second, and the full in third
  • packet pick-up was convenient and quick, bag check was organized, race started on time, the course was very well marked, and I've already raved about the goodie bags...
  • only complaints: the race shirt was New Balance (not Adidas...ugh!)...and they seemed a little cheap and poorly sized (wide..good for the belly, I guess...not so great for my tall, slim husband), and the port-a-pots were not anywhere near desirable, but at least they seemed to have enough
  • bottom line...if you're looking for a good race, check out one sponsored by Sportsfacilities...specifically the Palermo 15k in August
  • sadly, post-race rituals didn't quite feel the same with this one
  • I wasn't really exhausted or in need of a big meal or nap
  • but I wanted those things anyway...
  • so we resorted to a snack, epsom soak, an hour nap, then a post-nap brunch of french toast
  • all of which were nice, but not AS nice as if we had just ran an awesome 15k
  • what could cheer me up?
  • a baby
  • luckily, we knew of one out of the womb we could visit
  • a couple Jake works with just had their first baby, and we had been meaning to pay them a visit
  • so we spent the rest of the afternoon cuddling with little Delfina
Delfina, 3 months old
  • she is just so darn precious...plus Jake got some daddy practice in!
  • moving forward...today is Tuesday, yesterday walking felt less painful meaning the hip flexor pain subsided...today went to yoga and may have messed something up again
  • got a swim on the schedule for tomorrow, and much-anticipated acupuncture appointment on Thursday
  • will keep you posted on how that goes...until then, I'll continue to try to keep this body of mine in some sort of healthy shape!
  • ...still thinking about that half marathon in less than 5 weeks...
