Salta...Finca Valentina

W 1.30.13
  • our delayed flight from Iguazú got us in a bit late...didn't they know we had a horseback ride booked for that afternoon?
  • we finally got our two cars rented, and fortunately we were able to push back our horseback ride, which lucky for us, made it all the more adventurous as wind and rains swept in quite strongly...good thing we're tough
  • the boys went golfing at a super classy course (haha, right guys? Jake described it as "exceedingly informal")
  • and Cathy relaxed back at our awesome finca (aka farmhouse...more on our accommodations further down)
  • our gaucho, Gustavo suited us up with helmets and leather shin-guard looking things to sort of act as make-shift riding boots

  • and soon after we saddled up, the rain began, so thankfully we were given ponchos; I was freezing even with the poncho, so I can't imagine without
  • off into the meadows we went, with Gustavo and his trusty dog....
  • crossing a rocky stream...
  • through a pond (Kelly's horse had other plans)
  • and past sheep, cows, and other horses
see the baby?
  • we then stopped for a little break under a tree to stretch and have some water before continuing on
so in love

  • it was so peaceful out there without other humans or cars or noise...just us, our horses, and nature

  • we then headed back to the hotel to meet up with everyone
  • post-storm skies are always stunning

  • not quite sure where to start with where we stayed, Finca Valentina
  • I'm a little bit crazy-obsessed with the place, and would go back to Salta in a heartbeat just to stay at here again (thanks to a friend for the recommendation)
  • Valentina knows what she's doing...she has such a knack for the little touches
  • like an infinity pool out in the middle the country
  • or a stone floor, wooden shutters, saddle, candles, gaucho rope, and a fresh bouquet
  • or a beautiful bathroom with sea salts (yes, I did sneak into Cathy, Pat, and Kelly's bathroom for a bath...story below)
  • or local textiles hanging in the hallway (hi dad)
  • or little personal patios outside of each room
  • or gaucho hats adorning the entryway
  • or a carafe of water next to fresh flowers
  • or local woven rugs to step on when getting out of bed
  • or fresh flowers bedside (fresh flowers everywhere)
  • or personalized Finca Valentina handmade soap
  • or little star-shaped scones at the complimentary brunch buffet

  • this place just screamed peacefulness, serenity, and calm
  • if you're ever having a mental breakdown or whatever and need a sort of "Eat, Pray, Love" experience, I suggest you go here for a week+...it will surely put you at ease
living space
kitchen where the amazing chef prepared our delicious food and drink
  • I was so in love, I couldn't pull myself away to head into the city to tour around and have dinner
  • so Jake stayed back with me where the two of us enjoyed a delicious three course meal
  • I know I'm a huge dork, but it was super romantic, me in my running pants and pajama top and all...

Cathy took these couple shots...it was her idea, I swear
  • our table for two
  • squash soup and malbec
  • Jake built me a fire, by request
  • I helped keep it going
  • main course: a bit of local rabbit (first time?) and fresh veggies
  • and dessert...a freshly baked pear pie

  • by this point in the evening, we were supposed to be meeting the others in town to check out some local peñas (bars with live folkloric music)
  • but I was dying to try out Cathy, Pat, and Kelly's bathtub, so I went for it while Jake went back to our room to get ready
  • after ~10 minutes of bliss, I made my way back through the house to our room...but...to get to our room, you must go outside
  • well the lady working in the kitchen had locked up for the night...so basically I was locked in to the main house...I started knocking on the door, whispering Jake's name (there could've been guests upstairs sleeping...?) and after about 20 minutes of this, I was resolving to just cuddle up by the fireplace and read a book
  • then I remembered that Kelly had left her patio door unlocked, so I escaped through there and went around to the door of our room...phew!
  • we made it into town and went to Peña La Casona del Molino to have a beer and listen to the live tunes
  • the parents were getting a bit sleepy, so their car headed back while Kelly joined us to help show us around the downtown area by car
Th 1.31.13
  • do we have to leave?
  • we had a lot more sites to see around Salta and Jujuy...so...
  • after enjoying the tasty breakfast (photos above), soaking in a tiny bit of pool time, signing the guestbook...
  • and chatting with Valentina and her husband about the best route to our next destination...we were off
  • THANK YOU VALENTINA, FAMILY, AND STAFF!!!  we really hope to be back someday...
